Top Challenges of Diversity in the Workplace
Businesses need to be aware of the challenges that can arise from having a workforce that varies according to race, ethnicity, age, gender, sexual orientation, and ability. Apart from the ancient recruitment cognition, there are a handful of other challenges that may arise in the implementation of a diverse workforce. In the Hult International Business School Blog, author Katie Reynolds describes In her post, highlights international companies that regularly gather cross-cultural groups. While the company will certainly reap the above rewards, there may be a handful of issues such as language barriers, cultural barriers (some cultures do not promote women to executive roles, for example), and changes in professional ethics. (Hult,2019)
But, like many other challenges in your sector, with careful planning, education, and cultural integration, your company can evolve into a diverse, innovative, and cohesive powerhouse. These challenges include:
Potential for conflict: One challenge to diversity is the potential for conflict in the workplace. When people are from different ideas and perspectives, they are more likely to clash. This can be a problem in the workforce that can affect productivity.
Requirement for training: Another challenge to diversity is the need for training. Employees need to be trained on how to work with people who are different from they are. They also need to be taught the importance of diversity and how to create an inclusive workspace.
Communication Barriers: Communication in different workplaces can be a challenge. This is because people from different backgrounds do not understand each other. They can communicate in different ways and it can lead to misunderstandings.
Risk of discrimination: When there is a different workforce there is always a risk of discrimination against each other. This can be detrimental to employees and lead to loss of productivity. Diversity and inclusion (D&I) must go hand in hand. It should be clear to everyone that D&I is a priority and will not tolerate discrimination. It is not uncommon for top officials to be discriminated against in different parts of the workforce.
For example, in many companies in the United States, whites are generally preferred over blacks overpower, facilities, and promotions; In Japanese companies, Indians are not treated equally, even though Indians have a similar job profile; Many companies do not pay women employees the same pay as men for the same job. Such discriminatory actions lower the morale of employees.
Cultural Misconceptions: Cultural misunderstandings can also be a challenge in the different workforces. This is because people of different cultures are not familiar with the traditions of others. This can lead to confusion and frustration.
As with any major initiative, there are challenges in achieving and maintaining diversity in the workplace. But many of these challenges can be addressed and little can be done to suppress the positive effects of focusing on diversity and inclusion. This is an important task that can benefit our communities and our groups, and it deserves our attention. (Hanks,2018)

i would like to add as per my opinion, One of the most significant obstacles to greater workplace diversity can be a person's unwillingness to change. It is possible that when new rules and personnel are introduced into an organization, some employees will be resistive to the changes that are taking place.
ReplyDeleteCommunication difficulties, cultural misunderstandings, slower decision-making, inequitable inclusion, and final opinions on the difficulties of equality in the workplace are some of the challenges.
ReplyDeleteI Agree with your opinion. But many of these challenges can be addressed and little can be done to suppress the positive effects of focusing on diversity and inclusion. This is an important task that can benefit our communities and our groups, and it deserves our attention.
DeleteFollowing may also can consider as challenge,
ReplyDeleteLack of employee resource Group.
This is not you discussed under " Requirement for training ". Employee resource groups (ERGs) are internal groups focused on particular themes. For example, a women-in-leadership or diverse background ERG. They come together to discuss shared experiences, support one another and build a sense of belonging and inclusion for those groups within the organizations. It's important to have talent pipelines that nurtures diverse talent, equitable opportunities for all employees, and inclusive work environments that make everyone feel like they can be their authentic selves and belong. Employee resource groups are a key part of inclusion and belonging. Having these groups creates a space where members of groups that are usually a minority in the workplace can build relationships with others like them. ( Reeves M. 2021 )
